Four years old living with her grandmother Namaria Ortiz and grandfather Miguel in the Mora Mountains. She broke her arm.
(follows the middle of page 1) An Indian woman took care of her with her broken arm and stayed with family until she was over 100.
(continued from the middle of page 1) She and Mama "Lupy" (I think) watched a woman being hung from the window of her father's house. During the Civil War officers would visit to buy supplied because Las Vegas was the only place in the area with a store. Her father moved to a new place where he could keep ambulances for the officers. Cumanchies, Apaches, Navajos and others would visit the store and Juanita was never afraid. She had a big bedroom in back of the store wit a garden and a patio. Her mother was sick in bed and she was the only child. She loved to play with dolls.
While she was sewing by candle light she saw a man creaping on the floor toward her mother. She went to the store to get her father. The man was holding her mother demanding jewlery. She says the fright made her mother well.
Her father's brother, Andrew Dold, lived across the way with hs wife Mary and there sons John and Henry. Andrew and Mary were from Germany. They went back for a year and left the kids with Juanita's mom. They brought her a china doll. All she had had before were rag dolls. Each year on the 24th of June the would celbrate John the Baptist so every named Juan or Juanita would honored. Since there were two Johns in the house, Juanita and her father they all celebrated at their house.
Some traditions and cellebrations.
