1155 Record Type: Marriage Certificate
Bride's Name: Geertruida Maria Elisabeth Statius Muller
Groom's Name: Jan Hero Adriaan van Daalen
Date: 17 Mar 1880
Vol Name/no: no. 12/1880/city
Memo: Marriage certificate no. 12/1880/city

Today, march 17, 1880 appeared before me, registrar Willem Barend Mellink, on the island of Curaçao, at the house no. 370, Overzijde (Otrobanda - C.) appeared in order to get married
Jan Hero Adriaan van Daalen, 38 years old, attorney general, born and living on this island, widower of Elisabeth Sophia Louisa Muller, son of Adriaan Frans van Daalen and Jannetje van der Meulen, couple, both deceased on one side and
Geertruida Maria Elisabeth Statius Muller, 24 years old, no occupation, also born and living on this island, daughter of Hendrik August Statius Muller, head of the building department here and Johanna Catharina Voogd, no occupation, cou;e, living here on the other side
Both announcements for this marriage have here taken place without interference on the 7th and the 14th of this month, according to the document prepared by the deputy registrar in the city district here, and have the engaged submitted, the groom his birth certificate and the death certificate of his former wife, the bride her birth certificate and a certificate in which officer of health, head of the health department here, mister Ferguson declares that the bride suffers from dizzy spells and therefore unable to come to city hall and this is the reason that the marriage takes place in the home.
The parents of the bride, present, have given their permission for the marriage.
After I have asked the couple if they are willing to accept each other as man and wife and do all that is required by law from a married couple, and they have answered yes I have declared them man and wife in the presence of
Jan Ernst van der Meulen, 56 years old, merchant, cousin of the groom; Willem Constan Willemsen, 35 years old, gauger (calibrator?), brother-in-law of the bride; Isaac Christiaan Statius van Eps, 36 years old, retired major of the infantry and Caper Claude Francis Frederik Perret Gentil, 51 years old merchant's clerk, all witnesses living on this island and the two last uncles by marriage of the bride.
And a document was prepared, which after reading has been signed by the couple, the parents of the briede, the witnesses and by me, registrar.

(Because the bride was considered a minor, her parents had to give their consent with the marriage)

The fact that both marriages took place at home, had nothing to do with a sickness of the brides (perhaps one or the other of the many brides of the period who got married at home was pregnant). At the time it was very fashionable not to appear at city hall, it gave some status to get married at home, therefore the couples did not mind to pay additionally for the favour of the registrar, but they also needed a certificate by a doctor, which was no problem if you had the money to pay for it.

Today, july 5, 1876 appeared before me Willem Barend Mellink, registrar on the island of Curaçao in the house no. 352, Overzijde (Otrobanda C.) to get married
Carel Robert Alexander van Osenbruggen, 30 years old, officer with the royal dutch navy, now detached here, born in The Hague in Zuid Nederland, son of Carel van Osenbruggen, docter in philology, retired teacher of the Haagse Burgerschool (the public school - C.) in The Hague, residing there and Anne Burns Marshall, deceased, married couple to the one side and
Louisa Catharina Scholtz, 31 years old, no occupation, born and living on this island, daughter of Frederik Anton Scholtz, pharmacist, living here and Maria Augusta Möller, deceased, married couple on the other side

The two announcements for this marriage have taken place here without interference on june 11 and 18, according to the deputy registrar in the city district and the certificate was made up, while the engaged have handed over their birth certificates and a certificate in which Theodorus de Veer, doctor physician declares that the bride is suffering from nervous heartbeats, therefore it is appropriate that the bride should marry in her home.

After I have asked the couple if they are willing to accept each other as man and wife and do all that is required by law from a married couple, and they have answered yes I have declared them man and wife in the presence of
Anton Willem Abrahamsz, 41 years old, merchant; Jacobus Johannes van den Berge, 43 years old, Officer and administrator with the royal dutch navy, meester (academic title) Johannes Petrus Smeele, 44 years old, member of the colonial council, president of the court of justice in this colony and Joseph Möller, 27 years old, government official, all living here, the first three acquaintances of the couple and the last cousin of the bride.
And this document was ….. and signed by the couple, the witnesses and the registrar.

SUICIDES YESTERDAY
A Highly Esteemed Hollister Woman Takes Poison
HOLLISTER, March 20. - Mrs. R.E. Shore, wife of an ex-Supervisor of this county, committed suicide at her home last night at San Felipe by taking strychnine. The deceased returned the night before from Milpitas, where she had lost much sleep and had been overfatigued in waiting upon her sick mother. She was driven to her home with her husband and brother, and the former suspicious that she might attempt suicide on account of her mental condition, took the precaution to remove, as he thought, all poison from her reach.
At 2 o'clock she rose from her bed, left the room for a few moments and on returning told her husband she had taken poison. In twenty minutes she was dead. Mrs. Shore was one of the most esteemed ladies in the county, and the news of her death and the manner of it was a great shock to the community.
