Biography |
- John was of the borough of Stamford in Lincolnshire (about 100 miles north of London) and was alderman (or Chief Magistrate) of Stamford, Lincoln County in 1376 and 1377. In 1376 he was deeded land in Tolethorpe in Rutlandshire (a couple miles away, but in a different county). From "Early Settlers of Watertown":
Tolethorpe is situated on the right bank of the River Quash, in the Parish of Little Casterton, in Co. Rutland, about two miles north of the Borough of Stamford. In the 50th year of Edw. III. [A.D. 1376], Sir Thomas de Burton, Knt., by deed, dated on the Saturday next after the feast of St. Martin, the Bishop, conveyed to John Browne, of Stamford, Esq., all his lands, tenements, rents, and services in the Village of Little Casterton, with the reversion of the patronage of the church there.
