Hugh was count of Tours and Sens during the reigns of Charlemagne and his son Louis the Pious. But, in 827 he was told to recruit an army to fight a Moslem invasion on the boarder of the kingdom and Moslem controlled Spain. He waited until the threat passed which earned him the nickname "Timidus" or "the Timid". The next year Louis deposed Hugh. Hugh maintained some prominence though since he had arranged for his daughter to marry Louis' son Lothair. | -, Hugh Count of Tours and Sens (I3132)

Hugh was King of the Franks from 987 until his death in 996. Even though he is descended from Charlemagne from both parents, he is not part of the Carlingian Dynasty because both lines are through women. So, Hugh is the first French king of the Capetian Dynasty.
He had allied himself with German kings but when Lothar's son Louis died with no hair to the throne, Hugh was elected by an assembly of nobles. One of the nobles said:
Crown the Duke. He is most illustrious by his exploits, his nobility, his forces. The throne is not acquired by hereditary right; no one should be raised to it unless distinguished not only for nobility of birth, but for the goodness of his soul.
The idea the birthright should not be the only cirteria was a little unusual. | -, Hugh Capet King of the Franks (I3118)

All the rest of my estate is to be divided into five parts, and four of the parts are to go to my four sons, Abraham, Isaac, Johanes, and Cornelius. The other part to the children of my only daughter Maria, which she had by her former husband, John Spratt, deceased, and to such children as she may have by her now husband, Captain David Provoost, merchant. In Vol 1 of "Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury" Hoyt says that there is no proof that she is the daughter of Joseph. The relation is assumed by name. But in Vol 2 Hoyt says that Joseph was mentioned in the will of a Nicholas Stanton of Ipswich, Suffolk Co, England in 1648 and in Vol 3 he says that there was a Joseph Moyce who married Anna Folcard on Nov 22, 1609 and had a daughter named Anna born Sept 16, 1618. The reference is from Dennington Parish, Suffolk Co., England. The name of Anna for the mother and daughter is very close to Hannah (the spelling of Hannah was much more common then) and the birth date of 1618 is within three years of her husband Bartholomew Heath (about 1615). | Moyce, Hannah (I751)
